The 2017 British Street Food Awards — the toughest street food competition in the world – is coming to Manchester this weekend. And GRUB, the city’s innovative street food events company, are playing hosts. After five regional heats, the 17 best traders in the UK (check out britishstreetfood.co.uk/2017/09/the-a-team/
) will fight it out to be crowned champion on Sunday – and win the right to represent the Britain in the inaugural European Street Food Awards in Berlin.
It’s all going off in the iconic Mayfield Depot on the weekend of September 16/17. The derelict railway station is being repurposed as the centre of the street food world – for one weekend at least. Lucky punters will enjoy free tastings of the competition dishes as well as testers of the craft beers involved in GRUB’s craft beer festival, drawn from the best breweries in Manchester and beyond.
The free tasters — introduced as part of the BSFA’s new ‘mad minute’ — will mean the people of Manchester get to try everything before voting for the People’s Choice. A guest panel, including Andi Oliver (judge on the BBC’s Great British Menu) and Michelin-starred chef Brad Carter, will vote for the Best of the Best.
Both winners — declared at 4pm on Sunday — will then head off to Berlin to represent Britain in the inaugural European Street Food Awards. In Berlin — europeanstreetfood.com. So there's a lot at stake. To vote, download the app (at britishstreetfood.co.uk/hungry/
