This course runs over two evenings — Wednesday 13th September and Wednesday 20th September 18.30 until 20.30.

Create a simple 3D model using free software and learn how to generate slices for laser cutting.

Whether you’re looking to sample 3D objects as prototypes or you just fancy making a unique sculpture for your home, learning how to slice a 3D design is your starting point.

Using open source software (free software available for anyone to download online) and corrugated card as a build material, makes this method an ideal way to start tinkering with 3D prototyping without breaking the bank.

You’ll get to know the basics of open source 3D software, essential tools for any budding digital maker.

Who is this course for?

This workshop is suitable for everyone, including young makers aged 11+. All under-18s must be accompanied by an adult (all participants need their own tickets).

Equipment you’ll need

All equipment will be provided on the day, you just need to bring yourself.

What you’ll learn:

The concept of slicing to create 3D objects
The basics of Tinkercad
Creating files ready for the laser cutter
Induction to the HPC laser cutter

Your Tutor

Gemma May Latham is a participatory artist/maker who interprets textiles through digital and analogue processes. Gemma creates interventions and installations that explore traditional craft skills. She embraces processes that are intrinsically slow, creating a calming effect that allows time to connect with both process and material. The process of making and this experience is far more important to me than any physical outcome.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The MadFabLab is in the Northern Quarter in Manchester.

There are a number of options for getting to us by public transport.

By tram

The nearest tram stop is Shudehill, on the Bury–Altrincham and Rochdale–East Didsbury lines. For other lines, Piccadilly Gardens is the closest and we are just 5 minutes walk away from here.

By bus

The nearest local bus station is Shudehill/Thomas Street, for visitors coming from North Manchester. For other local buses, Manchester Piccadilly Bus Station is located just 5 minutes walk away. The nearest national bus station is the Shudehill Bus Interchange, although Chorlton Street Bus Station is 20 minutes walk away.

By train

MadFabLab is less than 15 minutes walk away from both Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria train stations.

By air

From Manchester International Airport, there is a train station at Terminal 2 with regular trains to Manchester Piccadilly Train station which take approximately 35 minutes. Alternatively, taxis are available outside all terminals and will take roughly 30 minutes on a good day, costing around £25.

By car

If you are driving to reach us, there is limited on-street parking in the area. Alternatively, there is an NCP Car Park roughly two minutes walk away. Also, be warned that the Northern Quarter has a somewhat inscrutable one-way system so bring your sat nav.

By bike

Cyclists are always welcome and we have cycle storage next door at MadLab (36-40 Edge St).
