This year has seen an increased focus on the mental health of the nation by politicians, schools, businesses and even the Royal Family. Is our quest for happiness driving us mad? In this talk I’ll look at the facts, figures, science and practice of mental health. I’ll also discuss perspectives from existential philosophy and existential psychotherapy, evolutionary psychology and my personal history. Expect an entertaining, informative and provocative evening with some strong language because this stuff really pisses me off.

Here’s some things to consider about mental health.

Mental Health is freedom; the better our mental health, the more freedom we have to live our lives and make choices. Who influences and controls our mental health and therefore our freedom to live our lives? Mental Health is power, who decides if we are crazy and how do they decide?

Who decides on what types of treatments are available and who gets treated? Is depression a disease, a chemical imbalance, genetics or something else? What is natural? What is normal?

LGBT+ people have a higher risk of mental health problems, drug and alcohol abuse and suicide than the general population. Why is this relevant to everyone?

Does psychotherapy work? Who are the psychotherapists? Are depression and anxiety good for you? Mental Health is now the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK. Is our work driving us mad or something else?

“Schools serve the same social functions as prisons and mental institutions — to define, classify, control and regulate people.” Michel Foucault. Should all schools have psychotherapists?

Mental Chemicals: According to NHS digital, 63.6 million antidepressant items are prescribed and dispensed in England a year and this number is increasing. Is the state making us dependant on their drugs whilst banning legal highs?

Mental health is money: The Chief Medical Officer’s 2013 report says that in the UK, the estimated costs of mental health problems are between £70-£100 billion each year and account for 4.5% of GDP. How should we fund mental health needs, how should the money be spent and on who?
