As part of Manchester Histories Festival 2018 and marking the 150th anniversary of the first Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Manchester and Salford in 1868, DJ/writer Dave Haslam will be interviewing the TUC’s current General Secretary, Frances O’Grady.

The world of work is in crisis. Expect discussion on the current challenges (trade union membership has halved since the 1970s), and the potential role of trades unions in a contemporary landscape of zero hours, job insecurity, Brexit, deregulation, low pay, and the gig economy. This is also an opportunity to discuss what we can learn from radical, labour, and Manchester history. In addition, we’ll gain an insight into Frances O’Grady’s ideas and inspirations, and discover more of her personal journey; from joining the Labour party aged 15, memories of her time studying at the University of Manchester, and her thoughts on being the first woman in the role of General Secretary.

Doors at 7pm, the event starts 7.30pm, with an approximate running time of one hour (including plenty of time for audience questions).

‘For me, trade unionism isn’t a career — it’s a cause’ Frances O’Grady, the first female General Secretary of the TUC on being on the Woman's Hour Power List.
