Our sell out launch event with Joe, Reckonwrong and Phoebe Valentine was a hell of a dance, and we’re excited to bring more of the same to Soup Kitchen. On selection duties this time round we’ve got Bristolian Timedance boss Batu_music and Manchester rising star, LOFT – it’s set to be a big one!
— ~ Batu [ Timedance, Hessle Audio, Livity Sound ]
Lord of the Timedance Batu blurs the lines between a variety of UK sounds. His productions draw from an assortment of genres including techno, jungle, grime and dub with the occasional nod to percussive jazz or afrobeat. The maiden release on Timedance, his own 'Cardinal'/'Domino Theory' showcased his appetite for driving the UK sound forward, sub and percussion heavy –well worth a listen. Subsequent releases on the imprint included ‘Reez’ [Timedance003], where broken, eccentric drums are accompanied by a hard-hitting bouncy low end, and the thrilling ‘Murmur’ [Timedance008] which boasts a disorienting and enthralling range of drums, both are sure to get anyone locked into the dance.
Batu’s first release on Hessle Audio in June 2017, ‘Marius’ [HES030] was up there with the best of Hessle’s recent releases – demonstrating his ability to produce impressively distinctive UK dance music; take for instance, the polyrhythmic ‘Nosema’, which blends 4/4 drums with fickle, jumpy clicks and toms. It’s representative of where the scene is going, without forgetting its origins, a trick that is easy to miss but Batu gets it spot on.
Accompanying the Timedance label is a Bristol based series of parties under the same name. Aiming to provide room for like-minded producers and DJs to push the bounds of dance music with performances from the likes of Pearson Sound, Laurel Halo, Ben UFO and Objekt (to name a few). We can’t wait to have him down – don’t sleep on this one!
— ~ LOFT [ Wisdom Teeth, The Astral Plane ]
LOFT’s first release in October 2016 ‘Turbulent Dynamics’ [APR105] was a triumph in experimental club music. ‘Heffalump’ sees high end sound design paired with a flowing range of drums and grooves. 2017 saw the producers rise with an EP on the Wisdom Teeth imprint [WSDM007], dance floor epics are intertwined with playful and intricate drums and synths, with ‘Funemployed’ getting a feature in Björk’s Mixmag cover mix.
LOFT’s sets are a reflection of their productions – drawing on a variety of UK sounds, the DJ moves elegantly between genres making for fascinating listening (see Crack Mix 197). Club sets have brought more of the same charm with a greater focus on dance worthy kicks, bubbles and thuds. We’re very excited to have them down!
