This is a chance for Home Educated children to complete the nationally recognised YNSA award in map-reading and navigation.

The focus of the Young Navigator Awards is to encourage exploration and journeying using simple maps. There is a gradual learning progression via One Star (bronze), Two Star (silver) and Three Star (gold) levels with certificates and badges available for achieving candidates.

The awards are aimed at all age groups and abilities. The Young Navigator Star courses are fantastic for youngsters to actively learn outside the classroom, and the Gold level is often used as a lead-in for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award. The YNSA is suitable for all ages and level of ability, including those with learning difficulties. The course can be adapted for those who require wheelchair access, but please advise us in advance so we can ensure the day's programme is set appropriately.

The syllabus content is structured to allow flexible teaching approaches.

THIS EVENT IS SUITABLE FOR NEW PARTICIPANTS WORKING TOWARDS THE BRONZE AWARD OR FOR PARTICIPANTS WHO HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED THE BRONZE AWARD AND ARE WORKING TOWARDS THE SILVER AWARD.

There is no lower age limit, however, under 5s should be accompanied by a parent.

Parents are welcome to attend at no charge.

The award will teach spatial awareness and the ability to interpret two-dimensional plans and maps into three dimensions, develop a sense of direction and an ability to orientate themselves within the landscape. It will give them strategies to plan and undertake journeys and relocate themselves when lost. It will also cover safety aspects.

The awards cover many areas of the National Curriculum at various Key Stages and include elements of mathematics, geography, and P.E.

The Bronze level should be achievable in one or two sessions. However, participants will need to demonstrate the required tasks at each level before a certificate is awarded.

What do children need to bring?

Clothes appropriate to the weather – it can get quite muddy underfoot and it can be cold outdoors even in summer. A change of footwear is a good idea, especially for going home in! They can also bring a drink or snack if they want to. Bear in mind that they will need to carry this themselves. Also any medication they might need.

Who is running the course?

SMT Training have many years experience delivering programmes of outdoor learning. All staff are qualified and have clear DBS checks in place. The course tutor is a qualified First Responder and first aid instructor with many years experience within Mountain Rescue. He is a qualified Mountain Leader who has taught outdoor skills to children (and adults) for over 30 years. He is a member of the British Mountaineering Council, the MountainTraining Association and the Institute of Outdoor Learning and holds both teaching and assessing qualifications.
